The cultures of Europe, and the ancient history of Turkey and Greece, combine together with the sun-bathed Mediterranean beaches, to make Cyprus a bargain holiday destination to excite the senses.
Cyprus remains a divided nation with the southern half of the island under Greek Cypriot control and the northern half ruled by Turkey, identified more with Europe than with the Middle East. Larnaka, with its main international airport, is the first taste of Cyprus most travellers encounter, featuring a seafront promenade edged with palm trees, relaxing cafes and tavernas, and cheap tour packages galore.
Cosmopolitan delights, such as charming cafes, parks & historical museums and discount hotels await you at the the sprawling and still-divided capital of Nicosia (Lefkosia) all easily traversed by foot in the Old City. Take a day trip to the Troodos Mountains with stops at picturesque 12th and 15th century Byzantine frescoed churches and monasteries, forests of pine and wine making villages.
Then head to Limassol, the second largest city and main port located in the southwest, for some fun in the sun. This is also the center of the island's wine industry. There’s lot’s to see and do here with public gardens, museums, the ever-present tavernas and popular beaches like those found at Dassoudi and Germasogeia. In September, they hold the annual wine festival where local foods and wine flow freely.
Of course, no bargain holiday visit to Cyprus would be complete without a trip to the western half of the island where unspoiled natural beauty is at its peak around the Akamas Peninsula coast. Close to Paphos and excellent for swimming, cycling and walking, with many trails to explore such as the popular Aphrodite and Adonis Trails. Relax and treat yourself to a day in one of the many luxury spas Cyprus is famous for or have fun at one of the excellent waterparks on the island. Cyprus is also becoming internationally famous for it's lovely golf courses which are all in idyllic settings.
