Once you start to explore this fascinating Caribbean Island of Jamaica you will discover a lively, energetic place, with plenty of bargain holiday packages to be found. It is also quite large, making it a great place to travel around on your own, driving and staying a few nights in each place, with a great choice of cheap hotels along the route. There are so many tourist attractions in Jamaica, that you are bound to find something to suit you, from it’s old architectural beauty, faded Georgian grandeur in the towns to it’s heart-rendingly beautiful plantation buildings set in fantastic countryside.
Jamaica is spread over a number of resort areas, named after the major town in the area, with the resort usually stretching well beyond the town itself. The towns each have their own character. Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are the main ‘volume tourism’ and cruise ship destinations, and they have many cheap hotels, sights and shopping areas. Negril has a completely different feel, lining a beautiful beach and cliff-fronts. It has some delightful discount hotels and a very laid back atmosphere. Port Antonio is also a calmer and quieter spot, against a backdrop of pretty countryside.
On the north coast between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios you will find smaller tourist areas. Discovery Bay , Runaway Bay, Treasure Beach and Bluefields are on the stretches of undeveloped coastline on the south coast. Boston Bay and Long Bay, in the East, are very simple and offer a delightful laid back experience. And there is Kingston the capital, home of the Jamaicans’ Jamaica, which of course is extremely lively, and the Bob Marley Museum for reggae lovers. The humdrum of the city is inviting, but even here you will find the Blue Mountains just close by, which are some of the gentlest and most charming areas in the Caribbean.
